3 Big Mistakes YouTubers Make

Big Mistakes of YouTubers

The very first thing that a lot of YouTubers are not doing is they're not thinking about their audience. That's right, I'm talking to you. A lot of YouTubers are not thinking about their audience when they're making content. They're thinking about hey, I wanna make this video, hey, I wanna make that video, hey, I just want a channel with a bunch of videos on it doin' a bunch of different stuff, but they're not thinking at all about what their audience wants. And a bad thing about that in addition to people not responding to the content is that because you're not thinking about the audience, you're making some really bad content decisions. And that's causing your channel not to grow.

One thing that I always recommend to people is that you think about a target group of people or a target person that you're trying to reach, that you're actually making your content for. And by doing this, it can help dictate one, your content decisions in terms of what it is that you actually put out, but two, it can also help you actually make that content in a way that those people will respond to it more. When you do this and you fine-tune everything for that target person or that target group of people, then when somebody actually lands on your channel, and they're actually finding your content, they know hey, this is the place for me. And that is exactly what you want.

The second thing that a lot of YouTubers are doing wrong are they're not thinking their content through or they're taking way too long to put the content out that they're putting out. Don't get me wrong, I know some content takes a long time to make, no problems there, but what I'm talking about is the content that should only take a little bit of time, but because people are caught up in being perfectionists and all that, it takes a lot more time to get something out than it should. And full transparency, I struggle with this one myself, but I'm workin' through it.

But here's the thing, yes, you want to have things at a certain level, you wanna have things at an acceptable level, you want things to be good, you want things to reflect on you, like hey, people see this, hey, that's good content right there.

Trust me, I get it, I'm a humongous believer and advocate for visual authority in terms of people responding to things. Hey, if this is a good experience for your viewers, then they're gonna be more likely to actually respond to that content, I get it. But, if you could be putting out more content and making that content a little bit less perfect, maybe if you have content to where it's like hey, I'm puttin' graphics all over the place and all these things are moving around and all that stuff, experiment. Try this and just see what happens. Experiment with putting in a quarter less graphics than you normally do and see how people respond, see what the audience retention looks like. If you normally spend tons of time on the polish of the video which is all of the fancy stuff that you do to the video to make everything better, then, in that case, cut that down a little bit.

And then go into your audience retention and see how people actually respond. What I found is that yes, people definitely respond when you use B roll, yes, people definitely respond when you use graphics, yes, people definitely respond in most cases to all of that stuff, however, in some cases, they don't. I've trimmed my stuff down a ton and it hasn't mattered. I've worked with people that have trimmed their stuff down a ton and it didn't matter. But again, I get the whole personal pride side of things, but what I'm saying is that if you're thinkin' to yourself, hey, I wanna put out more content, then you might wanna think, okay, well where can I kind of shave off some of this extra polish stuff that I'm doing so that I can put out more content? Because of the more content that you put out, that's more opportunities that you have to actually get that content out there in front of people and get more people coming into your channel as long as it's at an acceptable level.

The third thing that a lot of YouTubers are doing or potential YouTubers are doing is they're saying hey, I'm limited by the tech that I have. And I get it, you might not have the latest phone that can shoot the best lookin' videos for a phone. You might not have the best cameras, you might not have the best audio equipment to make everything sounds awesome, but what you do have are you do have a webcam or you do have that phone in your pocket that can get you out there developing the skills of making videos, of presenting on camera, of uploading your content, of getting that workflow together. Basically using what it is that you have now to develop the skills that you're gonna need in order to really make this stuff work out for you.

If you are on a phone, and you are looking at that as a limitation, I'm gonna put a link right up here to my brother's channel, he actually teaches people how to master their mobile and how to make content on their mobile phones, you definitely need to go check him out. And once you check out his channel, you're gonna see that that phone in your pocket is not a limitation in any way, shape, or form. Another mistake that a lot of YouTubers make are they don't enjoy the journey.

They look at it and they stress out about it, oh my gosh, I gotta get a video up, or oh my gosh, my 48-hour stats aren't what they're supposed to be, or oh my gosh, I'm down a little bit this month compared to what I was last month, or this other channel's growing faster than mine. Look, this is a long game, this stuff takes a while, so instead of being stressed out and frustrated by it, you're gonna be doing it anyway, you might as well embrace the process, enjoy the process, learn to make it apart of what it is that you do, and you're gonna enjoy this so much more. And when you enjoy it, people can actually see that in your content, it's gonna reflect, and people are gonna be like hey, it looks like they're having a good time, so I'm gonna subscribe and I'm gonna watch their videos because I dig that somebody's having a good time.
